Ferro Silicon (FeSi): The Foundational Alloy for Modern Steelmaking

Ferro Silicon (FeSi) is a master alloy composed of iron and silicon, produced by heating quartz, iron ore, and carbon sources at high temperatures in an electric furnace. With silicon content typically ranging from 15% to 90%, it is a cornerstone material in the ferrous metallurgy industry. ERST Group specializes in sourcing and supplying various grades of FeSi to meet the stringent demands of steel, foundry, and specialized chemical producers across Eurasia.

Key Applications and Functions

Ferro Silicon’s unique properties make it indispensable in enhancing the final mechanical and chemical quality of metals.

Primary Functions

  • Deoxidizer: FeSi is used primarily to remove dissolved oxygen from molten steel, thereby preventing the formation of harmful inclusions and ensuring sound, defect-free ingots and castings.
  • Alloying Element: Introducing silicon into steel increases its strength, hardness, and elasticity, simultaneously improving resistance to both corrosion and high temperatures.
  • Inoculant: In the production of cast iron, specific low-aluminum grades of FeSi are used as an inoculant to control the microstructure, promoting the formation of desirable graphite flakes.

Quality Assurance and Typical Grades

ERST Group ensures that all Ferro Silicon supplied is compliant with international standards, backed by a lot-specific Certificate of Analysis (CoA). Our most commonly sourced grades are defined by their silicon content:

Standard Ferro Silicon Grades

Ferro Silicon Grades Table (Final Robust Fix)
Grade Silicon (Si) Content (%) Aluminum (Al) Content (Max %) Primary Applications
FeSi 75 72.0 – 78.0 1.5 – 2.0 High-grade deoxidation in high-strength steels.
FeSi 72 68.0 – 72.0 1.0 – 1.5 General steelmaking and casting applications.
FeSi 65 60.0 – 68.0 1.5 – 2.0 Cost-effective alloying and deoxidation.
FeSi Low-Al 72.0 – 78.0 Max 0.5 Critical inoculation processes in cast iron foundry.

In addition to Silicon, standard FeSi 75 specifications include:

  • Carbon (C): Max 0.1 – 0.2%
  • Phosphorus (P): Max 0.035%
  • Sulfur (S): Max 0.02%
