Ferro Silicon Manganese (FeSiMn): The Multi-Purpose Deoxidizer
Ferro Silicon Manganese (FeSiMn) is a vital ternary ferroalloy composed of iron, silicon, and manganese, produced by the carbothermal reduction of manganese ore and quartz in electric arc furnaces. It is recognized as one of the most cost-effective and versatile additions in steelmaking. It is extensively used as a powerful deoxidizer and alloying agent in the production of virtually all steel grades. ERST Group supplies this key ferroalloy with certified purity and adherence to global standard specifications.
Key Applications and Functions
FeSiMn provides powerful, dual benefits in molten steel due to the simultaneous presence of manganese and silicon.
Primary Functions
- Primary Deoxidizer: FeSiMn’s most critical role is deoxidizing molten steel. Silicon and manganese combine with oxygen to produce stable silicates and manganese silicates with low melting points, which readily separate from the melt and join the slag.
- Mechanical Property Enhancement: Silicon boosts the steel’s strength and elastic limit, while manganese improves hot-workability and hardenability.
- Desulfurizer: Manganese reacts with sulfur, forming manganese sulfides, which prevents the creation of harmful iron sulfides, thus improving the steel’s ductility.
- Economic Advantage: Using FeSiMn simplifies the alloying process and is more economical than adding Ferrosilicon and Ferromanganese separately.
Quality Assurance and Typical Grades
Ferro Silicon Manganese is typically graded based on its manganese and silicon content. The most common commercial grade is FeSiMn 60/14.
Standard Ferro Silicon Grades
| Grade | Manganese (Mn) (%) | Silicon (Si) (%) | Carbon (C) (Max %) | Phosphorus (P) (Max %) | Sulphur (S) (Max %) | Primary Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FeSiMn 60/14 | 60.0 – 65.0 | 14.0 – 18.0 | 2.0 | 0.30 | 0.05 | Cost-effective deoxidizer and alloying additive in the production of carbon and low-alloy steel. |
| FeSiMn 65/17 | 65.0 – 70.0 | 16.0 – 20.0 | 1.5 | 0.20 | 0.05 | Used in steels requiring higher silicon levels for improved deoxidation kinetics. |
| Low-C FeSiMn | 60.0 – 65.0 | 14.0 – 18.0 | Max 0.5 | 0.30 | 0.05 | Specialized grade for stainless steel or alloys demanding extremely low carbon content. |
