5SP Steel Billet: High-Strength Fully Killed Steel

A Steel Billet is a fundamental semi-finished product in the steel industry, produced through continuous casting. It is subsequently rolled into long products such as high-strength rebar, structural profiles, and specialized wire rods.

5SP Steel Billet refers to a high-strength structural carbon steel grade, defined by the GOST standards (often referenced as St5SP). The key differentiator is the “SP” (or PSFully Killed Steel or Spokoynaya in Russian), which signifies that the molten steel has been fully deoxidized using elements like Silicon (Si) and Aluminum (Al). This full deoxidation process eliminates gas evolution during solidification, resulting in a cleaner, more homogenous steel structure with superior mechanical and processing properties compared to semi-killed grades like 3SP.

ERST Group supplies premium 5SP Billets, ideal for demanding civil engineering and high-load structural applications.

Key Characteristics and Applications

5SP steel is chosen for projects requiring reliable performance under heavy load and stability in variable environments.

Key Characteristics

  • High Homogeneity: Fully killed status ensures a uniform internal structure, minimizing segregation and internal defects.
  • Higher Strength and Hardness: Possesses superior tensile and yield strength compared to 3SP grade.
  • Good Low-Temperature Ductility: The homogeneity makes it more reliable in colder climates and for applications subject to impact.
  • Consistent Quality: The rigorous deoxidation process ensures predictable behavior during rolling and subsequent fabrication.

Primary Applications

  • High-Load Rebar: Used in critical concrete structures (e.g., high-rise buildings, bridges, dams).
  • Machine Components: Due to its higher strength, it is used for axles, shafts, and general machine parts.
  • Structural Engineering: Heavy-duty angles, channels, and beams requiring enhanced structural integrity.
  • Forging: Preferred material for forgings due to its internal cleanliness.

Standard Chemical Composition (GOST 380-94 / St5SP Equivalent)

The chemical limits for 5SP are tighter than 3SP, especially the minimum Silicon content, which confirms its fully killed status and is indicative of its superior quality.

5SP Steel Billet Chemical Specification

5SP Steel Billet Specification Table
Element Specification (%) Impact on Steel Properties
Carbon (C) 0.28 – 0.37 Higher content contributes to increased strength and hardness.
Manganese (Mn) 0.50 – 0.80 Enhances mechanical properties and microstructure.
Silicon (Si) 0.15 – 0.30 Required minimum confirms **Fully Killed** status; ensures homogeneity.
Phosphorus (P) Max 0.040 Impurity control for preventing cold brittleness.
Sulphur (S) Max 0.050 Impurity control for preventing hot shortness.
Nitrogen (N) Max 0.012 Controlled to maintain high internal cleanliness.

Size and Packaging Solutions

The dimensional parameters for 5SP billets are similar to 3SP, optimized for seamless integration into various rolling mills.

  • Standard Sizes: Square cross-sections typically range from $120 \times 120$ mm up to $150 \times 150$ mm.
  • Length: Customized to client specifications, usually between 6 meters and 12 meters.
  • Packaging: Supplied in robust bundles, securely strapped with steel banding for stability during handling and marine transport.
